A fresh twist on two classics.
It’s rare that a hybrid sport will make you stop to ask, ‘Why would no one have ever thought about it?’ …but Padel Pingpong does. From the vigour of Padel and the finesse of table tennis, Padel Pingpong draws the best of both to forge a sport that is fun, accessible, and very addictive.
What makes Padel Pingpong different?
At first sight, Padel Pingpong looks familiar. There’s a net, racquets, and a ball, but the details make it unique. In classic table tennis the use of a 40mm ball is the norm, Padel Pingpong uses a slightly larger 55mm ball. This slight variation chills the tempo just enough to gain more control over the ball – more time and longer rallies.
Another clever design feature is the drop-shaped racquet that gives more precision and control, thus allowing more shot possibilities. A game with glass walls that keeps the rallies going results in a skillful but forgiving sport for all ages.
How it all began
Padel Pingpong is a very new sport whose inception can be traced back to 2020 in Sweden. The creators came up with the idea after a game of Padel was followed with a quick round of table tennis. They soon began experimenting with the walls, and almost instantly the rallies were much longer with so many more shot possibilities. It was from this fun experimentation that Padel Pingpong was conceived.
Since then, it has quickly grown beyond Sweden, gaining fans all around the world. One of the main promoters of the sport is Yuhan Chen, a former member of the Chinese national team and a coach in Denmark, who saw the potential of the sport and became one of the co-founders of Padel Pingpong International.
Why it’s catching on in the UK
Awareness is growing at pace in the UK. More and more venues are attracted by the concept as it is not only a fun and inclusive activity, but it’s also a lucrative profit centre. The courts are compact – eleven times more space-efficient than a Padel court, and the initial outlay pays back within a few months.
A sport made for everyone
Perhaps the best part of Padel Pingpong is that it welcomes everyone. Whether you are a seasoned table tennis player, a Padel enthusiast, or just someone looking for a fresh way to have fun, the game has a place for you. The pace, control, and social element make it an ideal activity for families, friends, and colleagues.
It is still early days for this new sport here, but if the growth in Europe is anything to go by, you’ll be seeing a lot more of it soon. For those who love discovering something different and exciting, this might just be the perfect next step.
